Security of IEEE 802.11 considering Power and EM Side-Channel Information

چکیده
This paper introduces the side-channel perspective on wireless security. We assume an attacker is able to measure the power consumption or the electromagnetic emanation of cryptographic operations performed at the access point or at the station. Under this assumption, we review standards for wireless security like WEP as defined in IEEE 802.11b, and TKIP as defined in IEEE 802.11i. We furthermore show how to apply a template attack at the core cipher of WEP and TKIP: RC4. Our attack can be used to recover the symmetric session key of an IEEE 802.11i compliant network.

متن کاملOn Power Managed Multiple Access Control in an IEEE 802.11 Based Ad Hoc Wireless Network
In an ad hoc wireless network using IEEE 802.11 as the multiple access control (MAC) protocol, power control is a crucial issue. Specifically, by using a judicious power control mechanism, co-channel interference among simultaneous communications can be significantly reduced, thereby improving the channel spatial reuse and network capacity. However, this is now impracticable in a traditional IE...
متن کاملSide channel parameter characteristics of code injection attacks
Embedded systems are suggestive targets for code injection attacks in the recent years. Software protection mechanisms, and in general computers, are not usually applicable in embedded systems since they have limited resources like memory and process power. In this paper we investigate side channel characteristics of embedded systems and their applicability in code injection attack detection. T...
متن کاملA new CPA resistant software implementation for symmetric ciphers with smoothed power consumption: SIMON case study
In this paper we propose a new method for applying hiding countermeasure against CPA attacks. This method is for software implementation, based on smoothing power consumption of the device. This method is evaluated on the SIMON scheme as a case study; however, it is not relying on any specific SIMON features. Our new method includes only AND equivalent and XOR equivalent operations since every ...

As Wireless Local Area Networks (WLANs) are rapidly deployed to expand the eld of wireless products, the provision of authentication and privacy of the information transfer will be mandatory. These functions need to take into account the inherent limitations of the WLAN medium such as limited bandwidth, noisy wireless channel and limited computational power. Moreover, some of the IEEE 802.11 WL...
